Endana Secondary School Project Kenya

EWB at UCI is currently partnering with a community in Kenya and is focused on providing the community with alternatives to issues affecting their quality of life. The project is focused around the Endana Secondary School and the surrounding community, which is comprised of several different villages. A team recently traveled to Kenya and performed a technical assessment at the secondary school and a large community health assessment, interviewing households in over five different villages.

From our time in Kenya we believe that a successful project has three main primary components; public health, education, and engineering. EWB at UCI is implementing these components by developing a strong relationship between the community development team and the engineering team. Together they will work to address issues in both the community and the secondary school.

Key issues determined by the community health assessment include

• Latrines and Basic Sanitation/Hygiene
• Water Quality and Rainwater Collection
• Wood Burning Stoves and Indoor Air Quality

EWB at UCI is planning to return the community in June 2011 to work with the community and secondary school on developing their awareness of key health risks, the understanding of relevant alternatives, and the tools to build and maintain these solutions. The 2011 Kenya Travel Team will of students from various disciplines, such as engineering, public health, and education. Engineers and students of all majors are encouraged to join EWB at UCI and help us make this project a success.

Meetings are held weekly, with joint meeting held between the engineering team and the community team held every other week. See the calendar for dates and times.

Labdoo Computer Project

Labdoo is a social network project with the mission to bring laptops to the children and schools of the developing world as efficiently as possible. Do you have an old unused laptop that is sitting in the closet? Do you know someone else with the same situation? Labdoo is able to collect these, refurbish them, and arrange for them to be installed where they are needed. The process is clean and transparent. All the information on the laptops are better than erased using a zeroing out method. Labdoo is also conscious of the problem of electronic waste and continually strives to use the best solution to dispose of unusable laptops.

If you want us to pick up an old laptop, want to get involved, or even for some simple questions, you can email us at
